Kiwi wine boss wants broader importer ranges

New Zealand Winegrowers is calling on importers to expand their portfolios beyond Sauvignon Blanc and to take on more brands that represent New Zealand’s regional diversity.

“I’m working very hard to get distributors to broaden their range and have five or six agencies. Some of them have only

one or two,” said UK boss David Cox.

At a conference ahead of the London International Wine Fair, Cox also urged the wine trade to look to independents and mail order for value and potential growth in the market. “Consolidation and reduction in [supermarket] ranges have meant the independents are having a heyday,” he said, with currrently around 50,000 off-trade outlets to supply.

Cox described the mail-order market as “vibrant” and claimed average bottle prices were showing positive signs, despite duty and VAT increases. “We’re a nation of cheapskates, but we’re going in the right direction. The average price is now £4.35, up from £4.23 last year. People are spending more and trading up.”?He also
