Super lagers are still selling well

28 May, 2010

Q What’s the latest on superstrength lagers? I still sell as many as ever but I hear sales are collapsing.

A Maybe not quite collapsing, but the category has seen better days. According to Nielsen figures for the year to March 20, market leader Carlsberg Special Brew was down 6% in the off-trade in value terms, and volumes declined by 7%. Tennent’s Super sales fell by 17% over the same period, and volumes by 11%.

The sector is bracing itself for George Osborne’s forthcoming emergency Budget, following the Conservatives’ manifesto pledge to target strong lagers with duty increases.
