Super lagers are still selling well

Q Whatís the latest on superstrength lagers? I still sell as many as ever but I hear sales are collapsing.

A Maybe not quite collapsing, but the category has seen better days. According to Nielsen figures for the year to March 20, market leader Carlsberg Special Brew was down 6% in the off-trade in value terms, and volumes declined by 7%. Tennentís Super sales fell by 17% over the same period, and volumes by 11%.

The sector is bracing itself for George Osborneís forthcoming emergency Budget, following the Conservativesí manifesto pledge to target strong lagers with duty increases.

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
