Threshers ‘doomed to fail’

A former Thresher franchisee has said the company had “lost touch” and was doomed to failure.

Jeanette Hughes has gone independent with Jen’s Tipples at her old Threshers store in Southsea, Hampshire.

“I now realise finally being able to break away from the franchise agreement was probably the best thing that ever happened to me,” Hughes said.

“I never realised just how many stifling trading restrictions Threshers had imposed, until the collapse removed all those stringent legal requirements and forced me to think for myself. Even without the recession the brand was doomed to fail sooner or later.

“Threshers was a typical national brand which had lost touch with the needs and buying habits of its local customers.

“This became obvious to me as soon as I had to start sourcing and selling my own stock.

“I suddenly found I could stock what my customers wanted to buy, not what Threshers wanted them to buy.”?Hughes said there were some “incredibly dark and very long days” between the collapse of First Quench last October and finally negotiating freedom from her franchise contract with KPMG this year.

She originally started working for Threshers as a sales assistant 12 years ago and took on a franchise in 2006.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
