Booths pitches World Cup beer

North west England supermarket chain Booths is promoting a range of beers from 17 of the 32 countries participating in the World Cup.

Beer buyer Dave Smith has amassed a range comprising the specially brewed Banks’s Lions Roar from England, Star from Nigeria, Mac’s Gold from New Zealand and Xingu from Brazil. Hosts South Africa and Australia, Argentina, France, Germany, Mexico, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain and the US are all represented.

The retailer – which won the Multiple Beer Retailer of the Year award in OLN’s 2010 Drinks Retailing Awards – has an offer of eight English beers for £8.

Smith said: “Booths has always prided itself on the quality and range of its beers and wines – we stock more than 120 English ales alone – but this year we’ve taken the competition to a new level.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
