Support Fairtrade throughout World Cup

A new campaign hopes to convert football fans to Fairtrade wines in the run up to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, while helping to support Fairtrade wine-producing communities.

Wine brands Stellar Organics, Fairhills, Thandi and Origins are taking part in the Sip for South Africa campaign, which ensures producers receive the Fairtrade minimum price for their grapes as well as a Fairtrade premium, which is invested in projects such as worker housing, day care centres and pension schemes.

Stellar Organic’s cellar master Berty Jones is vice-chairman of Fairtrade’s joint body, which allocates the premium.

Jones benefited from Fairtrade’s investments when training to become a winemaker.

He said: “I have had the opportunity to fulfil my potential because of the funding provided by Fairtrade.”?

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
