Limited edition malts released by Jura

11 June, 2010

The Isle of Jura distillery has released a range of limited edition cask-strength bottlings.

The Boutique Barrels Collection consists of three vintages which reflect “the island’s simplicity and remoteness”, according to Jura distiller Willie Cochrane.

“Jura is uninterrupted by the hustle of modern-day life.

“We have one shop, one pub, a bank that opens once a week and less than 200 residents who are full of character,” Cochrane said.

Each expression has been named after the cask it was matured in and the filling system used.

Bourbon XU 1999 (rrp £55) is a heavily peated malt with notes of “bonfire smoke and a combination of pear smoke, pine wood and lemongrass on the tongue”.

Bourbon JO 1995 boasts “toffee and vanilla on the nose with an aftertaste of spicy cinnamon and crushed apples”, and has an rrp of £65.

Sherry JI 1993 contains hints of “rich citrus, crushed almonds, spicy ginger and roasted coffee”, with an rrp of £75.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
