l Buckingham Schenk has added three new Proseccos to its portfolio from Schenk Italia. Rivani Frizzante NV, Villa Chiara Spumante Bianco NV and Villa Chiara Spumante Rosato NV are being listed by Morrisons.

London independent Roberson is celebrating 18 years of trading by selling Veuve Borodin NV Champagne at £13.95? – the price when owner Cliff Roberson founded the business in 1991.

Freixenet (DWS) has appointed Damian Clarke as its new sales director. He previously held positions with St Ivel as grocery trading director and in sales at Gillette and Procter & Gamble.

German wine group ZGM has launched the Spanish wine brand Los Vividores in the UK?. A rosé Tempranillo from La Mancha, with an rrp of £5.99, is listed in Morrisons. Tempranillo/Cabernet, Tempranillo/Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are also available.

Pol Roger has released its Brut Vintage 2000 on to the market, as it says the popularity of the 1999 vintage means stocks are running low. It is listed by the Wine Society at £45 per bottle.

Rhône producer Cellier des Dauphins has developed three new premium wines for the UK. Blason des Papes and Les Trois Couronnes are both from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and are being listed by Waitrose and Spar respectively. The Grande Reserve Côtes du Rhône Villages does not yet have a listing.

Australian wine brand Wakefield has been released in gift packaging for Christmas, featuring Cellophane bags tied with a bow and branded with the Wakefield seahorse logo.

Domaines Paul Mas has launched its first 100% Carignan in the UK. A vin de pays from l’Hérault, Single Vineyard Collection Carignan 2008 is retailing in Majestic for £7.99 per bottle and is on promotion at £5.99 for two-bottle purchases until January.

Poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy has accepted a gift of a butt of sherry (720 bottles) from the Consejo Regulador Jerez. The traditional gift was revived in 1984 to mark the long-standing trading links between Britain and Jerez.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
