Call for ban on alcohol reward points

A leading doctor has called for ban on supermarkets giving loyalty points with purchases of alcohol.

Dr Brian Keighley, chairman of the British Medical Association in Scotland, made the claim in a debate at the BMA’s annual conference.

Keighley said: “Most alcohol bought for consumption is from supermarkets.

“There is a need to send the right message in drinking behaviour by not allowing rewards for buying alcohol.”

The debate also saw doctors repeat calls for a complete ban on alcohol advertising and the introduction of minimum unit pricing for drink.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
