l William Grant has completed its acquisition of the spirits business of Irish producer C&C International, whose brands include Tullamore Dew, Carolans and Frangelico. The newly acquired business will now operate as William Grant & Sons Irish Brands.

Chris Poole has been appointed customer services director of Diageo GB. His role will involve working with customers to improve on-shelf visibility, reducing costs through supply chain inventory management and “looking for innovative ways for Diageo and customers to work together”.

Islay distillery Bruichladdich has been named Environmentally Aware Supplier of the Year in Scottish Farmer magazine. The award was made in recognition of the distiller’s organic single malt and its use of modern barley varieties from 23 Scottish farms, including 14 on Islay itself.

A whisky tasting for women was hosted by Wiltshire specialist Arkwrights Whisky & Wines, in conjunction with First Drinks. A tutored tasting of the company’s Balvenie and Glenfiddich brands was used to introduce local women to the category.

Diageo has taken a controlling interest in the London Group, a joint venture that owns the Nuvo liqueur brand, sold principally in the US. Diageo was already a minority investor in the company with New York entrepreneur Raphael Yakoby.

A film about the history of Johnnie Walker, The Man Who Walked Around the World, has won the Diageo whisky a gold medal at Cannes Lion International Advertising Festival.

Maker’s Mark Bourbon has launched its first new whiskey in more than 50 years in the US market. Maker’s Mark 46 is given several extra months of maturation in a barrel with fixed seared oak staves inside.

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
