Figures reveal growth in £6-£10 bracket

New figures released by the Wine & Spirit Trade Association show a sharp increase in sales of wine in the £6 to £10 price bracket.

Sales of wines between £6 and £7 were ahead by 25%, and those priced between £9 and £10 were up 19.1% in value terms.

WSTA chief executive Jeremy Beadles said: “The growth in the £6-£7 and £9-10 ranges does suggest that, while consumers may be cutting back on spending elsewhere, the attraction of a better bottle of wine at home is tempting wine drinkers to spend a little more.”?Rosé sales in the off-trade rose by 9.2% in value in the year to May, with volume sales up 7.6%.

There was good news for Champagne too, with sales up by 7.7% in value, though a 12.5% increase in volumes suggests discounting is still playing a part in the fortunes of the category.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
