Wine experts launch agency for independents

A new wine agency business targeting independents has been set up by a winemaker and the former business development director of Enotria.

Hampshire-based Carte Blanche Wines is the brainchild of Ben Llewelyn, who established New Generation Wines after Enotria was sold to a private equity company, and Rupert Nicholson, who studied winemaking at Plumpton College in East Sussex, then worked with Cloudy Bay, Dr Loosen and Domaine Duc de Magenta.

They are both studying to be Masters of Wine and want to source wines from small and medium-sized producers.

Llewelyn told OLN: “So far the producers we have are biodynamic, organic producers or minimal interventionists. We’re concentrating on France and Spain at the moment but we also have three Barossa agencies in Australia and one from Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. We’ll be looking at Italy in the longer term.

“The meat of our business is around the £7-£12 retail price points.”?

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
