Boost for Carlsberg UK sales

Carlsberg says its UK beer volume sales increased by more than 10% in the first half of 2010.

The Danish brewer claimed its market share had risen to 16.2% in the first six months, with gains in both on- and off-trade.

June was positively affected by the World Cup, but the beer market had dropped off by 1% since, it added.

Total Carlsberg Group operating profit increased by 12% in the first six months of 2010, though beer volumes were down by 2% at 55.8 million hl.

Chief executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen said: “The group’s performance was strong for the first six months in spite of challenging consumer dynamics.

“We will continue to balance our plans to improve efficiency and margins with our ambitions to drive top-line growth.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
