Brown Bros adds Cienna sparkler

Australian winery Brown Brothers has launched Cienna Rosso, claimed to be the first sparkling wine to be produced using the red grape Cienna.

Available in Makro from September, rrp £8.99, the wine will target consumers drawn to “fruity, sparkling wine styles”. Cienna is a cross of Spanish variety Sumoll with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Gail Gilbert, European sales and marketing manager for Brown Brothers, said: “We are excited about adding the Cienna variety to our innovative wine portfolio in Makro. Based on the feedback we have, including at the World Class Australia annual trade tasting, we are confident it will be a hit with consumers.” It joins Brown Bros’ other sparklers which include Zibibbo, Zibibbo Rosa, and NV Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

Reasons to be cheerful

I would like to think my outlook on things is generally optimistic. Perhaps that’s a natural consequence of working with something designed to give pleasure. But recently it has become increasingly difficult to ignore a creeping sense of negativity pervading the British wine trade.
