Wholesaler snaps up Oxshott outlet

20 August, 2010

Brighton wine wholesaler St Martin Vintners has opened a wine shop in Oxshott, Surrey.

Directors Andy Rice and Gary Jenner bought the lease of Macmillan & James, an off-licence which has been trading independently since the collapse of Unwins.

Jenner described Oxshott as “the richest village in Britain”, set in an area inhabited by Premiership footballers and other millionaires.

Jenner said: “We had looked at a few First Quench outlets but the ones we wanted had all been sold.

“Unfortunately, for various reasons, the shop had not been viable but it represented an ideal opportunity for us. We had supplied the shop for about a year so knew it was going to become available.

“The problem it had was there wasn’t a lot of stock, so it was very restricted on what it was able to do.

“We’ve gone in there with about 450 wines, everything from entry-level Chilean and French wines to top-end Bordeaux.”?Jenner said the business, bought from the late Martin Sneath three years ago, would continue to focus on wholesaling but was interested in other retail opportunities if they emerged.

The main depot, near Brighton train station, also sells to the public.
