Grants zones in on Tullamore Dew

01 October, 2010

Scotch whisky producer William Grant & Sons has sold its Carolans, Frangelico and Irish Mist liqueur brands, less than three months after buying them from Magners firm C&C International.

Italian spirits group Campari is paying e128 million for the liqueur brands.

The latest deal is a clear sign that Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey was the key prize for Grants in the package it originally bought.

Grants has already set up a new marketing office in Dublin to handle the brand.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
