Published:  13 October, 2010

Direct Wines has bolstered its buying team with the appointment of Dan Parrott, who becomes senior buyer for Australian and New Zealand wines.

Parrott, who has worked for the Coles Liquor Group for the past five years, will be based in the McLaren Vale and report to Steve Grimley, managing director of the newly-formed subsidiary Direct Wines Source Australia.

An Australian national, Parrott is a regular judge on the Australian wine show circuit.

Global wine director Justin Howard-Sneyd MW said: “Dan is a talented and highly respected buyer, who brings with him an extremely deep knowledge of the Australian and New Zealand wine industries. We are very pleased that he is joining our team.

“Our previous buyer for Australia and New Zealand, Thomas Woolrych, will now devote 100% of his time to his role as buying manager. Thomas’ ability to create winning wines is exceptional and I am delighted that he will be working alongside all the buyers to develop our wine range, both in the UK and around the world.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
