Thierry’s targets wholesalers

Thierry’s is launching a subsidiary company to target regional wholesalers at this year’s Wines of South Africa new releases tastings.

Cavendish Wines will be unveiled at the tasting in Edinburgh’s Merchants’ Hall on October 25, and will also have a stand alongside Thierry’s at London’s Vinopolis on October 28.

Both will show new wines including from Durbanville’s Diemersdal and new ranges from Robertson’s Excelsior and Orange River Wine Cellars in the Northern Cape.

All Cavendish’s wines are exclusive to the new agency and will not be targeted at multiple grocers or off-licence chains. Many of the producers are well-known, but there are also some new names on board. The wines have been sourced by Thierry’s buying team, Lindsay Talas and Dominique Vrigneau.

Cavendish Wines head of trading Claire Sheppard said: “We have spent a long time examining the market and getting our offer right. With a competitively priced, diverse, interesting range and the right support package, we are confident we have something different to offer the regional wholesale trade. We are looking forward to bringing some really exciting wines to a new audience.”?More than 60 producers will show their latest wines at the tastings, where there will also be a seminar on South Africa – A Decade On and a “tweetzone”, where visitors can sit down to relax and tweet about the wines they have tasted.

Arniston Bay has released new packaging with bolder colours, a picture of a petrel flying over the coastline and gold and silver foil. PLB will be showing new vintages from Vergelegen and Spier at the tasting.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
