Wine sales creep up despite volume fall

The latest Nielsen figures show that off-trade wine volumes continue to decline despite a small rise in sales value.

The total amount of wine sold in the 12 months to October 2 fell by 1%, while value rose 3% to £5.3 billion. This increase has been attributed to increases in duty, unfavourable exchange rates and other rising fixed costs, meaning supplier margins are under increasing pressure.

Average price per bottle now stands at £4.45 in the take-home sector compared to £4.30 a year ago.

Blossom Hill continues to be the best-selling off-trade wine brand, achieving a 1% sales increase over the period.

Second-placed Hardys saw sales climb 25%, Echo Falls by 50% and First Cape by 7%.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
