Wine sales creep up despite volume fall

The latest Nielsen figures show that off-trade wine volumes continue to decline despite a small rise in sales value.

The total amount of wine sold in the 12 months to October 2 fell by 1%, while value rose 3% to 5.3 billion. This increase has been attributed to increases in duty, unfavourable exchange rates and other rising fixed costs, meaning supplier margins are under increasing pressure.

Average price per bottle now stands at 4.45 in the take-home sector compared to 4.30 a year ago.

Blossom Hill continues to be the best-selling off-trade wine brand, achieving a 1% sales increase over the period.

Second-placed Hardys saw sales climb 25%, Echo Falls by 50% and First Cape by 7%.

The arrival of October means that we’re now officially in Nielsen’s Christmas trading period. Manufacturers and retailers alike have until December 30 to optimise their sales plans and activate them in-store in order to win at Christmas.
