Selfridges and Waitrose win at the International Spirits Challenge

Selfridges has won the award for the best independent spirits retailer at the 2010 International Spirits Challenge, announced at a ceremony in London this week.

Waitrose picked up the prize for best multiple spirits retailer, with the international retailer award going to World Duty Free.

The trophy for the supreme champion product was awarded to Japanese single malt whisky Yamazaki 1984. Producer Suntory also scooped the distiller of the year award, the first time in the eventís 15-year history that the two awards were won by the same company.

The outstanding contribution award was picked up by Wild Turkey master distiller and industry veteran Jimmy Russell.

Other trophy winners included Green Chartreuse, Chairmanís Reserve Spiced rum, Whyte & Mackay 30-year-old and Glenfiddich 40-year-old.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle Ė which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
