Call for duty evaders to lose their licence

26 November, 2010

A Lincolnshire retailer has called for shops that evade drinks duty to be stripped of their licence.

Robert Hancock, who runs Rob & Jan’s, a specialist off-licence in Boston, says HMRC has confiscated goods from shops in the town that have not had duty paid on them – but claims the action doesn’t go far enough.

“If this is not stopped soon there won’t be any shops like ours left,” said Hancock. “Some shops are selling 6%-8% abv beers at £1 a can, which shouldn’t be possible given the duty on a can.”

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
