Glass fragments prompt AB Inbev to recall Stella batches

10 December, 2010

AB Inbev UK has recalled some batches of Stella Artois in 25cl bottles because they might contain small pieces of glass.

The move comes a little over two weeks after the company was forced to withdraw batches of 30cl bottles of Budweiser, and a month after rival Carlsberg UK issued a recall on some bottles of Tuborg.

AB Inbev said the Stella recall was because of “an isolated issue affecting a single production run of glass bottles” from a single bottle supplier, and was unrelated to the Budweiser incident.

That recall, of a single batch of 15-packs, involved bottles from a different supplier and was caused by a problem with a filling line.

The Stella recall is on 10-packs with the batch codes L0219MZ, L0272MZ, L0288MY, L0308MY, L0309MY and L0309MZ, according to a product recall notice issued by the Food Standards Agency.

Notices are being displayed in stores explaining the reason for the recall, and consumers are being advised to return purchases to shops for a refund.

No other Stella Artois products are known to be affected.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
