Sharp's to release brew made in Orval link

13 December, 2010

Cornish brewer Sharp’s is to release a limited edition beer made in collaboration with Jean-Marie Rock, brewmaster at Belgian Trappist brewery Orval.

Monsieur Rock will be available in 50cl bottles with an rrp of £2 from January.

The collaboration was born after Sharp’s head brewer Stuart Howe visited Orval in the summer.

Howe said: “Monsieur Rock showcases the beauty of the Saaz hop and the depth and clarity of flavour produced through extended lagering.”

OLN columnist Zak Avery, who has had a sneak preview of the beer, added: “It was extraordinary – a 5% abv beer that drank like a session beer and with a depth of sweetly herbal complexity that made it ruiniously drinkable.

“It’s classic British ale, filtered through the minds of a couple of great brewers, and making a virtue of such old-fashioned values as elegance and understatedness.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
