New website for pre-phylloxera port
Published:  07 January, 2011

Taylorís has launched a website dedicated to Scion, its rare pre-phylloxera port.

Scionport.com tells the story of the wine, from its origins in a private cellar in the Douro in 1855 until Taylorís bought two casks and moved them to its lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. Scion is one of the only pre-phylloxera ports that has survived in cask for more than 150 years in perfect condition.

The wine is on sale at specialists such as Nickolls & Perks, Farr Vintners, Fine & Rare, Bordeaux Wine Investments and Harrods, packaged in a crystal decanter and priced £2,500. It is available to retailers from Mentzendorff & Co.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle Ė which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
