Wolf Blass scores rugby sponsorship deal

Wolf Blass has signed up with the Rugby Football Union as the official wine of English rugby until June 2012.

The period covered by the deal includes England’s participation in the 2011 World Cup. Wolf Blass will supply wine to all of England’s fixtures at Twickenham and will have pitch-side and match-day programme advertising, access to players for promotional purposes and receive complimentary tickets.

Wolf Blass will also be served to hospitality and event guests at the stadium and be listed as a recommended wine by the Rugby Football Union Wine Club.

“This sponsorship represents an opportunity for retailers to take advantage of predicted high sales, especially before the Six Nations and the build-up to the World Cup, when awareness will be exceptionally high,” said senior brand manager Annabel Keech.

Paul Vaughan, business operations director of the RFU, added: “Many of our fans and customers are wine lovers and savvy wine drinkers, so this is a perfect partnership for us.”?Rugby content and a competition to win match tickets will feature at wolfblassplatinumclub.com.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
