Bland beer banned says new brewer

Cheshire’s newest brewery – Blue Ball, based in Runcorn – has opened its doors for business.

Business partners Matt Riley, founder of the Home Brew Supermarket, and Alex Haycraft who was a brewer in the USA for 12 years, set up the brewery to create flavoursome beers.

Riley said beer enthusiasts were becoming bored and disillusioned by the blandness of what is generally available. “Beers built to be cheap, inoffensive, and drunk by everyone the world over – beers that taste just like one another, created by accountants,” he said.

The Runcorn brewery is based in the industrial unit next door to Riley’s Home Brew Supermarket, a home brew shop with more than 3,000 products on its shelves.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
