Ascella’s organic wines join Ehrmanns

18 February, 2011

Ehrmanns has been named UK agent for Australian producer Ascella Pure Wines, which operates the largest organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley.

The range, exclusive to independent retailers, includes Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Shiraz, each priced £10.99. Ascella Pure Red and Pure White wines will be exclusive to Whole Foods Market in London and will retail for £7.99 each.

Ehrmanns’ Australian brand manager Rachel Herrig said: “We were drawn to Ascella’s dedication to making quality wine, with practices that far exceed the organic certification requirements.”?Winemakers Liz Jackson and Greg Silkman use only natural preservatives, and grapes are regularly tested to ensure airborne chemicals have not contaminated the vineyard.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
