Heinrich Hartl Zweigelt Reserve 2009, Thermenregion?Supplier: Merry Widows (£16.50)?A fantastic spicy nose and rich black fruit. The palate has more gentle spice and soft tannins on the finish. NC?

Gernot & Heike Heinrich Pinot Noir 2007, Burgenland?Supplier: Liberty Wines (£30)?Heinrich is an ambassador of wines from the region around Lake Neusiedl. This has an earthy, warm nose and elegant red and dark berry fruits on the palate and a long finish. NC?

Erich & Walter Polz Grassnitzberg Traminer 2008, Südsteiermark?Supplier: Clark Foyster Wines (£25-30)?The Polz vineyards are found in Styria, close to the Slovenian border. Lovely delicate floral bouquet, fresh grapey notes on the palate with some oak creaminess. Very good finish. NC

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
