Wines of Germany to push Riesling in UK

Wines of Germany is gearing up for a summer of promotion around the country’s most famous grape with the focus on the UK’s first Riesling Week.?The event runs from July 23 to 31 and will see independent retailers encouraged to run customer promotions to highlight Riesling’s versatility, quality and food-matching capabilities.?The best-performing retailer will win £1,000 towards new German wine listings, with £500 for the runner-up.?POS material will be available to help participating retailers.?“With consumers increasingly looking for lighter, aromatic wines, now is the time for the trade to really get behind German Riesling and show everyone what they’ve been missing out on in recent years,” said Nicky Forrest, UK managing director of Wines of Germany.?“We’re looking forward to working with independent merchants to make Riesling Week a real success.”?Shops wanting to get involved should email germanwine@phippspr.com.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
