Own-label ranges round-up

09 February, 2007

Sainsbury's premium range, Taste the Difference, includes 39 wines from Europe and the New World, which it says are sourced from small, iconic producers and growers, a range of beers from the Meantime Brewery in Greenwich and an Irish Cream Liqueur.

There are seven wines in its SO Organic range, as well as a West Country cider, a blonde ale and spirits, including a Fairtrade organic white rum.

The supermarket also has a

Cuvée Prestige Côtes du Rhône Villages and a Pale Dry Fino in its core Range.

Tesco has

more than 250 own-label products in its BWS division, with 85 of them in the Finest range.

It said product development managers work directly with producers to create products which match customer preferences and own-label ranges are constantly reviewed.

Co-op has 12 own-label Fairtrade wines from Argentina, Chile and South Africa, and won the own-label category at this week's Drinks Retailing Awards.

Morrisons followed the lead of Tesco and Sainsbury's in Jan 2006 by introducing The Best brand to its BWS division.

John Spurs, licensed trade director at Morrisons, said although the company had a limited own-label range in terms of wines and spirits, what

it did have was proven to be good quality.

He said: "Has Allan tasted all these own-label products to make that judgement? He is more than welcome to join us at Morrison s and try what we have and make his mind up."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
