Redundancy fear of Oddbins staff

09 February, 2007

Some Oddbins staff could face redundancy as the multiple specialist continues its closure programme.

As reported in OLN on Nov 10, Oddbins plans to close 50 shops across the country over the next 12 months, but will open the same number in more profitable locations.

When asked if staff would be moved to new shops, a spokeswoman said "as and when new shops open, they are being offered the chance to move and will be in discussions with human resources".

She said shops were being shut down where they had "become unprofitable through rent rises - it's normal business".

One Oddbins employee told OLN : "People higher up in the company have been speaking and calling other shops and quashing rumours spreading around the company. Nothing has been put down in writing as yet."

The spokeswoman responded by saying all staff had been informed of the shop closure programme in writing last autumn.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
