Pierhead lists unique Bavarian brews

Pierhead Purchasing has listed three beers from the world's oldest monastery brewery in Bavaria, Weltenburger Kloster. The brewery has been making beer on the banks of the Danube since 1050, and still brews to age-old Bavarian traditions.

Pierhead will be selling Barock Dunkel, a premium dark beer at 4.5 per cent abv; Barock Hell, a 5.3 per cent abv pilsner, and dark doppelbock Asam Bock, which has 7.2 per cent abv. All three will be available in 50cl bottles.

The beers are made with local water which has low nitrate levels and then stored for up to three months in stone cellars 40 metres underground, according to Pierhead.

Imported beers director Michael Cook said: "Pierhead has high expectations for the Weltenburger Kloster beers. They have a remarkable brewing tradition behind them and are among Germany's finest brewed-at-source beers. We are confident their distinctive flavours will prove very popular in the UK."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
