It's easy to sit back and complain about the multiples, but with a bit of ­effort you can compete in your range and price. We've tried making our own hampers as a point of difference. You can fill them with Champagne, fine wine or whisky and sell them for £15 or more. Why not

fill a hamper with real ales for men, and Champagne, chocolates and candles for women. It's these little things that will draw in customers.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
