Cadbury to divide into soft drinks and confectionery

Cadbury Schweppes has announced plans to separat e its confectionery and soft drinks businesses.

Cadbury's American beverages business will part from the rest of the company, leaving the confectionery arm with brands such as Dairy Milk chocolate and Trident chewing gum.

Cadbury said the split would not affect retailers. "The confectionery business will remain the same and will not affect how UK retailers do business with Cadbury," a spokeswoman said.

The majority of Cadbury's UK soft drinks operations were sold to Coca-Cola in 1999.

Cadbury's chairman Sir John Sunderland said: "We believe now is the moment to separate and give both management teams the focused opportunity to extract the full potential inherent in these excellent businesses."

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
