UK relaunch sees Santa Isabel become Nimbus

06 April, 2007

Chilean winery Viña Casablanca, part of the Santa Carolina group, has teamed up with Copestick Murray Wine Solutions to relaunch its Santa Isabel range as Nimbus in the UK.

It is aimed at independents and multiple specialists . It includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Viña Casablanca has had a major staff shake-up after a period of decline several years ago and hopes to build up its reputation in the UK under new winemaker Andrés Caballero.

UK and Europe export director Ben Gordon said: "We realise the brand has been neglected in the UK, perhaps through not working with the right people. Now with Andrés we are confident we can put the wines in front of anyone and they will certainly hold their own - and some of them are outstanding.

"Now we are trying to put it in the right places, looking at the likes of Majestic and people who used to supply it like Harvey Nichols, and also the London on-trade. We are saying look, we are back to what we were before."

The Santa Isabel range used to be supplied by Brand Phoenix, and before that by Moreno.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
