Boutique winery Veritaus will distribute Australian range Chatto in the UK. The wines are made by Jim Chatto, who is based in the Hunter Valley. The range, which will be launched at the London wine fair in May, will include the Circus Series, targeted at the independent on and off-trades. Circus Series wines include Highwire Verdelho and Strong Man Shiraz. Chatto said the range highlights the "shared skills and remarkable passion" of both circus performers and winemakers.

Berry Bros & Rudd is holding a series of events at its Basingstoke Wine Factory Outlet, including offering a free bottle of Grand Cru UKC Champagne to customers spending £100 or more on April 14 and 15. Berry's is also offering customers mixed or single-wine cases of Sauvignon Blanc for the spring.

The interprofessional organisation for Vinhos Verdes has launched an online course about the Portuguese wine. The Knowing Vinho Verde level one course is designed to provide information on the region, viticulture and the wines themselves. Readings, activities and wine tastings will be suggested as part of the web-based programme. Further details can be found at European wine trade body Comité Européen des Enterprises Vins will announce its European wine plan at the WSTA's spring conference on April 18. Secretary-general José Ramón Fernández will outline the plan, which will give a new focus to existing responsibility initiatives in the UK. Vinoceros has acquired its first range of French wines, Fox Wood, which will be available exclusively to the independent sector. The wines made in the Languedoc by Australian winemaker and Vinoceros's new european sales manager, Mark Goundrey. The range consists of four single varietals - Gravelstone Merlot 2006, Old Bush Vine Syrah 2006, Dawn Picked Viognier 2006 and Bruno's Block Chardonnay 2006.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
