Warm welcome

Yorkshire-based chain Rhythm & Booze enjoyed a 40 per cent increase in like-for-like sales over the Easter weekend. Managing director Martin Swaine attributed the uplift to the UK's unseasonably warm weather, adding that "sales are buoyant which looks set to continue".

Responsible petition grows

An Early Day Motion call ing for retailers to end "irresponsible" drinks promotions has now attracted signatures from 187 MPs. The All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, headed by John Grogan, met UK supermarket representatives on April 18. A report will appear in OLN's May 4 issue.

Cheesman for Bordeaux

Allan Cheesman has been appointed non-executive director by Bordeaux rosé specialist Château de Sours. The former Sainsbury's trading director has been employed to help double the ch âteau's production over the next five years.

Longridge sold

Winecorp has sold its Longridge range and winery to focus on the Spier brand. The new owner is Aldo van der Laan, who own s Zwanenberg Food Group in the Netherlands. Stellenbosch-based Winecorp was formed in 1999 as the result of a merger between Spier, Longridge and Savanha wineries.

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
