Latest news in the off-trade's fight to curb irresponsible retailing

Bargain Booze has parted company with one of its franchisees after he was found to be trading irresponsibly.

The franchisee, who Bargain Booze did not name, ran two stores in the south east of England but was told to stop trading under the Bargain Booze name after he failed three test purchases in three months.

Joint managing director Matthew Hughes said: "He was persistently selling alcohol to under-age children and we had reason to believe from visiting him that he was not upholding best practice. We have got a reputation for responsible retailing which we need to uphold.

"Yes, we want customers, but we don't want to damage the reputation of our business, so we took this decision."

The chain has, however, decided to support a franchisee in Brighton who had his licence suspended for two months after failing two test purchases.

Hughes said he thought staff had been unfairly caught out during the stings and the franchisee is appealing against the ruling.

Tesco is also emphasising responsible drinks retailing by retailing low and non-alcohol drinks in the BWS aisles. Products include Beck's alcohol-free, Kaliber, Cobra 0.0, Bitburger Drive, Sutter Home Fré and Brown Brothers Cienna - a 5.5 per cent partially-fermented grape must.
