Lockspeiser quits to let Bottle Green stand on its own feet

Bottle Green managing director Jerry Lockspeiser will retire on March 31.

Lockspeiser founded the Leeds-based business in 1990 and sold it to Irish company DCC in 2004, agreeing, as part of the deal, to stay on for another three years.

He said the company, which started off by representing organic French and Hungarian suppliers, had grown its success by "understanding the major retailers' strategies and the needs of their buyers", developing own brands and understanding future market trends.

Lockspeiser said that leaving the company after 17 years was "a bit like having children. You nurture them until they grow up and leave. I've built the company up from one person, and now there's 30 people working there".

He added: "I feel I've helped something to grow and now it can stand on its own two feet. I feel fine about it. I'm an entrepreneur, and the way the industry has developed means that my replacement, Jon Eagle, has got better skills to take the company to the next level."

Eagle has senior management experience in sales, marketing and general management across a number of FMCG businesses such as Northern Foods and United Biscuits.

In a second senior change, Adam Marshall will be promoted to the new role of commercial director.

Bottle Green's brands include French Connection and Argentinian brand Inti.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
