Montana rises up to fizz challenge

Pernod Ricard is launching a sparkling wine under its Montana label this month.

Montana Brut 2006, a bottle-fermented blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, will be the first fizz in the New Zealand range.

Adrian Atkinson, wine development director at Pernod Ricard UK, said Montana Brut was made in a different style to the company's other New Zealand sparkling wine brand, Lindauer.

He said: "The wine has been in development for two and a half years and is differentiated from Lindauer Brut and Lindauer Special Select by its more Blanc de Blancs style, being 80 per cent Chardonnay, versus Lindauer which is predominantly Pinot Noir.

"We also believe the two brands complement each other since the new Montana Brut is clearly an extension to the well-established premium still wine brand .

"But Lindauer operates in the specialist premium sparkling wine area which we believe will become significant within the market ."

The wine, priced at 8.99, will be in Tesco from mid-March, Thresher from mid-April and Majestic from the beginning of May.

Montana's UK off-trade sales grew by 21 per cent to 32.9 million over the 12 months to Dec 30, 2006.
