Best of Spanish invited to compete

09 March, 2007

Entries are being invited for the 2007 New Wave Spanish Wine Awards, the annual event which showcases the best Spanish wines in the UK off-trade.

Wines from Spain and OLN have decided to bring the event forward this year to June 7 and 8 so producers and importers can show white and rosÚ wines from the 2006 vintage at a more appropriate time and to allow the importers and retailers to benefit from the event more effectively in the second half of the year.

Now in its third year, the judging of the competition will once again be led by Tim Atkin MW, who has gathered a panel of some of the most experienced palates in the trade.

Winners, including the trophy awards for each key category, will be announced in OLN on June 29 ahead of a tasting for the trade and the press on July 4.

The complete low-down on the event - the winning wines across all categories from sparkling, whites, rosÚs and reds to sherry and sweet wine styles, Tim Atkin's report on the event, the awards for contemporary and classic label design and related features - will be published in OLN's New Wave Spanish Wine Awards supplement on Sept 7.

For entry forms and details contact Josefina Castro at Wines from Spain on 0207 467 2359 or e-mail jcastro@mcx.es.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
