Al Fresco's the way ahead for outdoor wine drinking

09 March, 2007

A new shatterproof, pre-filled wine glass will change the way wine is drunk outdoors, its creator claims.

The Tulip wine glass is made of high-strength biodegradable plastic, which manufacturers claim won't break if a person weighing up to 100kg stands on it.

It is aimed at people who want to drink wine "more easily and safely when outdoors at concerts, sporting events or simply in the park with friends", a spokesman from London's Al Fresco Wines said.

The range comprises Trencherman Shiraz and Chardonnay from Southern Australia, and Trencherman Rosť from California. Al Fresco Wines also has a licence that enables other wine brands to pre-fill the Tulip glass with their own wine and to brand the recyclable foil lid.

James Nash, commercial director of Al Fresco, said: "The Tulip will help wine lovers to enjoy wine anywhere glass is not welcome and that helps retailers to match wine with a greater range of drinking opportunities.

"Spillage is reduced to zero too as consumers can easily carry multiple Tulips through busy crowds without wasting a drop." Each single serve has a nine-month shelf life and contains 18.75cl of wine. Multipacks containing 24 glasses are available to independent retailers.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards.
