Campaign for free proof of age cards in Scotland

Latest news in the off-trade's fight to curb irresponsible retailing

The Scottish Grocers' Federation is calling on the Scottish government to support a compulsory proof of age card for 15 to 25-year-olds.

The federation has launched a campaign, 100% Pr oof, for free cards, and a public awareness campaign to encourage consumers to carry ID.

The move would reduce the incidence of shop staff being threatened by shoppers when they ask for proof of age, the federation believes.

The SGF wants the card distributed to all eligible young people by 2009 .

SGF chief executive John Drummond said Scotland needed the scheme because it does not have access to Citizen Cards, only the Young Scot card which is focused on entitlement rather than proof of age.

The federation is focusing on building ministerial support after the Scottish elections. "Soon after May 3 we are going to issue every new MSP with a proof of age card. Hopefully, that will get the message across," Drummond said.

The federation has 250 members representing some 1,500 shops in Scotland.

More than 2 million young people have been issued with cards bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) hologram, according to chairman of the PASS board Robert Humphreys. The scheme was launched to offer a standard proof of age card across the UK.
