Britvic has a soft spot for Irish market

Magners' parent company C&C Group is selling its soft drinks division to Britvic for e250 million.

The deal means Britvic will acquire a stable of products including Ballygowan water, Club soft drinks, MiWadi squash and Energize Sport, along with bottling and distribution rights to the Pepsi and 7Up brands in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Irish C&C Group said it agreed to the sale so it could concentrate its business on its most successful brand, Bulmers cider, sold as Magners in Britain. The move will also enable the company to focus on its spirits and liqueurs portfolio which includes Tullamore Dew whiskey and Carolans Irish Cream, according to chief executive Maurice Pratt.

Britvic said the deal would be funded entirely by borrowing and completed

by Aug 31, pending approval by Irish competition authorities. No significant operational changes or job cuts are planned.

Paul Moody, Britvic chief executive, said: "This is an important acquisition for Britvic as we seek to expand the business both within the UK and by selective international expansion.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
