New owners plan more retail for Brighton cellars

01 June, 2007

Brighton wine merchant St Martin Vintners has been bought by two of its employees.

Operations manager Gary Jenner and senior sales executive Andy Rice have taken over the business,

based close to Brighton station, from Martin Sneath, who founded it 26 years ago.

Jenner told OLN the pair plan to expand the retail side . "At the moment we are probably 10 per cent retail and 90 per cent wholesale, and we would like to increase that to maybe a 30-70 or 40-60 mix," he said.

Earlsfield

merchant Wines of the World has opened a second London shop at the Polygon in Clapham.

The shop will offer more than 500 "cheeky and eclectic" wines sourced from small estates. Owners Jason Bellis and Anthony Jones have picked WSET diploma-holders Alex Roberts and Wayne Blomfield as managers. The retailer has a website at www.winesoftheworld.co.uk.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
