The local solution to a safer night out

A Sussex branch of The Local has been rewarded for its responsible retailing

Staff at The Local in Hastings were handed the Safer Socialising Award by the Hastings area business crime reduction partnership for helping to make the town a better place. To qualify for the award staff had to allow the police, fire service, council and Trading

Standards to inspect the shop and then make any suggested improvements to help combat under-age drinking.

Workers at drinks shops in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, have been praised by

police after successfully passing test purchases. An operation carried out in April and May saw staff at 11 of the area's 12 off-licences request ID and refuse service to a young person. PC Steve Irvin, of Stonehouse Safer Communities Team, said the results were "encouraging" and added: "It indicates that the majority of those in the trade are conscious of attempts by young people to purchase alcohol." He said the owner of the off-licence which failed its test purchase will be prosecuted.

Law firm Poppleston Allen has created a DVD to help retailers avoid selling alcohol to children. Teenage Kicks is available to managers wishing to train staff on their responsibilities. The DVD comes complete with a test so employers can prove staff have been trained.
