UK increases its wine consumption

Wine consumption is expected to increase by 2.7 per cent by 2011, according to a new Datamonitor report.

Datamonitor attributes the "runaway success" to the emergence of "megabrand wines" such as Jacob's Creek and Nottage Hill.

But it warns that these brands have "stunted the price growth potential of the wine category" because consumers are choosing to buy wine based on perceived value for money in supermarkets rather than in specialist wine shops.

The volume of wine consumed in the UK has risen at the fastest rate compared with other European countries, but overall consumption in the UK still lags behind that seen in France and Italy.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
