Bentley joins Enotria

Mike Bentley has joined Enotria as off-trade sales director from Foster's EMEA and Beringer Blass, where he was responsible for major multiple grocers and specialist customers, managing brands such as Penfolds and Wolf Blass.

New winemaker for Rare Bird

Claudio Gonçalves has been appointed head winemaker for Buckingham Vintners' Chilean wineries San Nicolas and Viñedos Puertas, where he will be responsible for brands Rare Bird, Las Rocas and 50. Gonçalves has worked for Chile's Montes, New Zealand's Framingham Estate and Bodegas Borsao in Spain.

Resurrection celebrations

Cooley Distillery is rolling out a limited edition Irish

whiskey to celebrate the resurrection of what it says is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. Established in the 1750s, the Old Kilbeggan Distillery stopped distilling in 1954. Cooley will initially produce up to 250,000 bottles of whiskey a year which will mature in adjacent stone warehouses. To mark the occasion there will be a special bottling of 15 Year Old Super Premium Kilbeggan Irish whiskey .

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
