Mumm's the word on vintage

Champagne GH Mumm has launched its prestige cuvée, Cuvée R Lalou. The first vintage - 1998 - will be on the UK market from September, on allocation only, to selected independent retailers and the on-trade with an rrp of £100. The Champagne is "produced in very small quantities, and only in the best years, sourced from up to 12 of the very best parcels" from Grand Cru villages, according to Mumm. The 1998 vintage is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, named after René Lalou, chairman of the House from 1939 until his death in 1973.

Pernod Ricard UK's head of Champagne Chris Seale said: "We fully expect Cuvée R Lalou to re-establish the credentials of GH Mumm's wine expertise at all levels. Certainly, initial response from key opinion formers and Champagne commentators has been extremely encouraging.

"This launch is not about creating a new super brand Champagne. The focus for Cuvée R Lalou is firmly on the quality of the wine - it's a rich, complex and full-bodied Champagne that will appeal to the real wine connoisseur."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
