Cider's on the Up with pear variant

Scottish & Newcastle UK is to launch a pear cider from Finland designed to be poured over ice.

Upcider Pear has 4.5 per cent abv and will be available in 12x50cl bottles from August. It is targeted at 25 to 49-year-old men and women who currently drink white and rosť wines or spirit mixers.

Craig Clarkson said: "The introduction of Upcider Pear will create additional consumer choice in a growth sector . Upcider will bring new drinkers into the cider category by offering a new, appealing flavour."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
