Wine fraudsters dupe producers

27 July, 2007

Police are investigating an alleged scam

in which a Languedoc producer suppl ied 18,000 bottles of wine to a bogus trader in north London.

Domaine de Marmorieres supplied 50 pallets of

AC and

Vin de Pays wines to an address in Tottenham

after receiving a call from someone claiming to be James Dee,

a wine buyer for Maxwell's restaurant. Maxwell's said this week

no one of that name work ed for

the restaurant.

The wine was collected from the winery by three transport companies

and delivered to the north London address. Neither the winery nor any of the transport companies had been paid.

Ret ailers are being warned to be on the lookout for wine from Domaine de Marmorieres, which has no official UK distribution.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
